After working with Florida families on their life insurance needs, I've seen the same mistakes come up over and over. None of them are catastrophic on their own, but each one can cost you money, coverage, or peace of mind. Here are the most common ones and how to avoid them.

1. Waiting Too Long to Buy

This is the biggest one by far. Every year you wait, your premium goes up. A policy purchased at 30 costs significantly less than the same policy at 40 — and that's assuming your health stays the same. If you develop a condition in the meantime, the increase can be even steeper. Life insurance is one of the few things in life that literally never gets cheaper. The best time to buy is always now.

2. Only Relying on Employer Coverage

Employer-provided life insurance is a great benefit, but it has two major problems. First, it's usually only 1 to 2 times your annual salary, which is rarely enough to fully protect your family. Second — and more importantly — you lose it when you leave the company. If you get laid off, change jobs, or retire, that coverage disappears. Having your own individual policy ensures you're always covered regardless of employment status.

3. Not Getting Enough Coverage

Underinsurance is extremely common. People often buy a policy that "sounds like a lot" without actually calculating what their family would need. A seemingly large number might cover the mortgage but leave nothing for childcare, education, or daily expenses. Take the time to calculate your actual need — income replacement, debts, future education costs, and final expenses — before settling on a coverage amount.

4. Buying the Wrong Type of Policy

A 25-year-old with a new baby probably doesn't need a whole life policy — term life gives them more coverage for less money during the years when it matters most. Conversely, someone focused on estate planning might be overpaying for a large term policy when a smaller whole life policy would better serve their goals. Match the policy type to your actual needs, not to what sounds best in a sales presentation.

5. Not Comparing Carriers

If you only get a quote from one company, you have no idea if you're getting a good rate. Insurance carriers each have their own underwriting criteria, and the same person can get vastly different rates from different companies. 6. Not Updating Your Beneficiaries

7. Letting a Policy Lapse

Missing premium payments can cause your policy to lapse, leaving you uninsured. Set up automatic payments via bank draft or credit card to make sure this never happens. Most carriers offer a grace period for missed payments (typically 30 to 31 days), but don't count on it as a long-term strategy. For permanent policies, lapsing also has tax consequences: if there's an outstanding policy loan and the policy lapses, the loan amount above your basis becomes immediately taxable as ordinary income — a "phantom income" event that catches many policyholders off guard. Florida residents who rely on F.S. §222.13 creditor protection for the death benefit also lose that protection the moment the policy lapses.

8. Not Verifying Florida-Specific Tax and Creditor Treatment

Florida is one of the most life-insurance-friendly states in the country, but most families never use that fact. F.S. §222.13 protects life insurance proceeds payable to a Florida-resident spouse, child, or other dependent from the deceased's creditors — meaning your death benefit reaches your family even if you die with significant outstanding debts. F.S. §222.14 extends similar protection to cash value during your lifetime. Combined with no state income tax and no state estate tax, this makes Florida residency a meaningful benefit for any household holding life insurance. The catch: these protections require the beneficiary structure to be set up correctly. Naming your estate as beneficiary (instead of named individuals) generally forfeits the F.S. §222.13 protection and pulls the proceeds into probate. A quick beneficiary review with a Florida-licensed agent confirms you're getting the protection the statute offers.
