Florida is home to more than 20 military installations and one of the largest veteran populations in the country. Whether you're active duty, reserves, National Guard, or a veteran, understanding your life insurance options is critical to protecting your family.

SGLI: Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance

Active duty service members automatically receive SGLI coverage up to $500,000. The premiums are very affordable — currently about $25 per month for the maximum coverage. SGLI is an excellent benefit, but it has limitations. It only lasts while you're on active duty (with a 120-day extension after separation), and the maximum coverage of $500,000 may not be enough for families with significant financial obligations.

VGLI: Veterans' Group Life Insurance

After separation, you can convert your SGLI to VGLI within 240 days without a medical exam. VGLI provides the same coverage amount but at significantly higher premiums that increase every five years based on your age. By your 50s and 60s, VGLI premiums can be two to three times more expensive than a comparable private policy.

For most veterans, converting SGLI to VGLI is not the best financial decision. A private term or permanent life insurance policy almost always offers better value, especially if you're in good health. The main advantage of VGLI is guaranteed acceptance — if you have serious health issues that would prevent you from qualifying for private coverage, VGLI guarantees you can maintain your coverage.

Private Insurance for Military Families

There's a common misconception that military service members and veterans can't get private life insurance or will face higher rates due to their service. In reality, most carriers are happy to insure military members, and rates are based on your health, age, and occupation — not your military status. Active duty members in non-combat roles typically qualify for standard rates.

The key consideration for active duty members is deployment. Some carriers have exclusions or waiting periods for deaths occurring in combat zones. Others provide full coverage regardless of where you're deployed. Make sure your policy doesn't have a war or military service exclusion if you're likely to deploy.

Supplementing Military Coverage

The best strategy for most military families is to use SGLI as a foundation and supplement it with a private policy. For example, if your family needs $1 million in coverage, keep your $500,000 SGLI and add a $500,000 private term policy. When you separate from service, the private policy continues while you evaluate whether VGLI or additional private coverage makes sense.

Spouse Coverage

Military spouses face unique challenges — frequent relocations that can disrupt careers, periods of single parenting during deployments, and the emotional toll of military life. SGLI offers family coverage for spouses up to $100,000, but this is rarely enough. A personal policy for your spouse ensures adequate coverage regardless of military moves.

Florida Military Population Scale

Florida hosts one of the country's largest military and veteran populations. Per the U.S. Department of Defense 2023 Demographic Profile report, Florida has more than 56,000 active-duty service members across 21 major installations — including NAS Jacksonville, NAS Pensacola, MacDill AFB in Tampa, Eglin AFB, Hurlburt Field, Patrick SFB, and Naval Station Mayport. Per the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs FY2023 data, Florida is also home to roughly 1.46 million veterans, third-largest in the nation behind Texas and California. That's nearly 1.52 million Florida households with at least one current or former service member — and per LIMRA's 2024 Insurance Barometer Study, only 52 percent of U.S. adults carry life insurance, leaving an estimated 730,000 Florida military-connected households materially under-protected. Lock in private supplemental coverage via the Florida military-family quote tool while you're in good health and before deployment cycles complicate underwriting.

Florida Scenario: NAS Jacksonville E-7 with $500k SGLI Gap

A 38-year-old Navy Chief stationed at NAS Jacksonville carried max SGLI ($500,000) plus $100,000 family SGLI on his spouse. With three kids, a $385,000 mortgage on a Mandarin-area home (per Zillow's 2024 Jacksonville value index), and a stay-at-home spouse, his family's actual income-replacement need was closer to $1.2M. He added $750,000 of 20-year term at $34/month at standard non-tobacco rates — a carrier that explicitly issues without a war/aviation exclusion at standard rates for non-aviation rates was selected by his independent agent. Total 20-year premium: $8,160 for $750,000 of coverage that survives separation from active duty, doesn't reprice every five years like VGLI, and pays the death benefit income-tax-free per IRC §101(a). When he transitions to retirement at year 22 of service, the private policy continues and the SGLI gap simply doesn't matter.

Product-Fit Recommendation: Match Coverage to Service Status

Active duty (under 40, no aviation/special ops): full $500K SGLI plus $500K-$1M private 20-year term from a carrier without war exclusion (USAA, Navy Mutual, Pacific Life, Prudential all issue without combat-zone exclusion at standard rates). Active duty aviation or special ops: pricing varies widely — work with an independent agent who can pre-screen Hannover Re-backed carriers that handle high-risk aviation classes at standard or table-2 rates. Reserve/Guard: SGLI rates for reserves are similar to active duty, but a private policy provides the foundation since drilling status doesn't guarantee continued SGLI coverage. Veteran/separating: convert SGLI to VGLI within 240 days only if uninsurable privately — otherwise apply for private term within 120 days of separation while still under SGLI coverage. Florida-specific: under F.S. §626.9541, no carrier may discriminate based on lawful military service or deployment status. Per IRC §692, surviving spouses of service members killed in a combat zone receive favorable estate tax treatment — coordinate with a JAG or military-experienced estate attorney. Request a service-status-matched Florida quote.

Your military service protects our country. Make sure your family is equally protected with the right combination of military and private life insurance coverage. Don't assume SGLI alone is enough — it's a great start, but most families need more.
